Heavy Rains in Mobile
Despite heavy rains in Mobile, Alabama, two rounds were completed in the 2008 Newton Cox USTA Men's Professional Tennis Event.
Qualifying round number one seed Alexander Sadecky and number two Richard Ruckelshausen were given a bye in the first qualifying round.
Sadecky will face Mark Oljaca of the United States. Ruckelshausen will play Chile's Guillermo Rivera-Aranguiz.
Twenty-year-old Ruckelshausen is from Austria but currently lives in South Africa. He is coached by Johann Meyer and is ranked 566 in the world.
Ruckelshausen played in the Brownsville Futures and gave a pep talk to students in Brownsville, Texas. "I think it's awesome," Ruckelshausen told a Brownsville paper. "I think it's great to get the kids together."
Back in Mobile, tournament director Scott Novak said in the local paper: "This is one the best groups of tennis players that we have had in recent history, and all of these players have dreams of playing in the U.S. Open, French Open or Wimbledon.
In a bit of exuberance and a possible over-statement, Novak said, "With a win in Mobile, a couple of these guys would have the ranking points to get into a Grand Slam. We are probably watching some of the next top professional players."
Anything is possible. Kevin Anderson went from the Brownsville Futures all the way to the final of an ATP tournament in the space of a week.
