Movers and Shakers: Carsten Ball

It is not too late to jump on the Carsten Ball bandwagon. Ball has just recently won a United States Tennis Association futures championship in September in Pomona, California.
He defeated Jarmere Jenkins 6-3, 6-1 Friday in the Texas 76ers Pro Tennis Event.

Ball summed up the tournament so far: "I felt good. The conditions were good. (Earlier in the tournament) it was raining; it was windy. I'm happy with the result....I made it to the semis. I'm happy. The other guys are good. It is just going to be the luck of the draw."

His opponent Jenkins is a junior player and is stepping a level. "He is going to be a good player," Carsten said about Jenkins. "He has got a lot of potential."

Ball plays Austin Krajicek at the Walnut Creek Country Club Saturday.

Michael McClune: Winning, but Vulnerable

It would not be an untrue statement to say that Michael McClune is lucky to still be in Texas 76ers Pro Tennis Event. He won two successive matches that any objective observer would say he should have lost.

Michael McClune and Luigi D'Agord played a classic first set Friday at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas. The first set went to 12 points in a tie-breaker won by D'Agord. It was excellent tennis, long rallies, both players had some pop on their serve.

Something inexplicable happened to D'Agord in the second set. He was giving off some body language that said he did not want to be there. There were whispers and murmurs in the stands: "He (D'Agord) is not competing." McClune won the second set 6-3.

Still D'Agord was up 4-1 and 5-2 in the third set for the match. And Michael McClune was heard to say, in the way that tennis players talk to themselves out loud on the court: "Sometimes you just feel like packing it in and leaving."

Somehow McClune showed some fight and D'Agord was at a loss as the third set became 5-4 and 5-5. In the end McClune won 6-7 (12), 6-3, 7-5.

After the match, D'Agord broke his racquet. He proceeded to the parking lot and broke the remainder of the racquets in his inventory. If he had shown as much determination in the match that he did in breaking his racquets, he would have won.

Michael McClune has had the good fortune of playing against two guys Luigi D'Agord and earlier Rylan Rizza who seemed to have decided that the stage was too big for them and seemed to have deferred to McClune.

Warning to McClune: the remaining players in the tournament -- Nicholas Monroe, Austin Krajicek and Carsten Ball -- are hungry.

Krajicek won 7-5, 6-4 at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas. Gastao had an opportunity in the first set; he was leading 4-3. They were tied 4-4 and 5-5.

In other singles matches in this futures tournament Carsten Ball defeated Jarmere Jenkins, and Nicholas Monroe defeated Vahid Mirzadeh. Full scores here.

The Tennis Hacker Interviews the Players

Being a reporter, as I attempted to be Thursday at the Texas 76ers Pro Tennis Event, can be a heady experience. With so many matches going on -- two or three at the same time -- it is no small feat to sort out who is who and who did what.

I donned my reporter's cap at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas, pen and pad in-hand and proceeded to interview the players. I said, 'Congratulations,' to the first interviewee. His reply was: 'For what?! I lost.'

In my confusion, I mixed up the players. My apologies to Milan Pokrajac who actually lost to Gastao Elias, 4-6, 2-6.

I was determined not to make that mistake again. Alexei Grigorov was easy to distinguish. He was the one talking to his racquet -- in Russian. Apparently there was a problem with the translation because his racquet did not cooperate and his opponent Jarmere Jenkins beat him, 6-0, 6-4.

I spoke with Jarmere. He said, "I was familiar with his game. I saw him in juniors."

Jarmere is all business. He talks about tennis like a chief financial officer talking about the quarter's numbers. "I just went with my game plan and concentrated. My game is coming along pretty good. I've been training the past two years for these tournaments."

I asked him which other players looked good. He said Austin Krajicek, Chase Buchanan and "the lefty from Florida."

The guys were all polite, so I feel obligated to post each of their comments.

Austin Krajicek, who defeated Ilija Vucic, 6-1, 6-4: "I know him very well. We played a lot in Europe. He played me tough and it was windy that made it tougher. I'm glad I played well and glad to get a win."

Vahid Mirzadeh, who defeated Henri Kontinen 7-5, 6-1: "I didn't know too much about him. He is a good a young player. The week is going well. Hopefully I could keep it going."

Michael McClune and Rylan Rizza was in an incredibly close match. Rizza proved to be bilingual -- he cusses fluently in English and Spanish. His cussing and temperament caused him; he was penalized two points. In an incredibly close match, he seemed more concerned with arguing with the umpire and eventually lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-7 (4).

Nicholas Monroe, at number two is the highest-ranking seed in the tournament. I did not get to see all of his match. I had to run home to watch Judge Judy.

Just before exercise, or during exercise, consider eating a Power Bar to boost your performance. Keep in mind, Power Bars are ideally-suitted for endurance athletes (marathon runners, distance cyclist and swimmers, competitive tennis players).

Recreational athletes should eat Power Bars in moderation; perhaps no more than a half bar or one bar a day. The best Power Bar for the recreational athlete is a piece of fruit.

Opportunities to Host USTA Tournaments

The United States Tennis Association is always looking for people or tennis centers that are interested in hosting a tournament like the Texas 76ers Pro Tennis Event. The USTA provides an experienced tournament director and a certified trainer to assist with the event.

High-energy, community-minded persons who are interested in hosting an event would need to secure a public or private venue, put together an operations staff, find an army of volunteers, and sign up business who would like to be sponsors.

"I think the most difficult part is trying to get the community to commit to sponsoring a tournament and the second hardest thing is to find good volunteers," said Abrie du Plooy. Du Plooy hosts two tournaments in Hammond, Louisiana, and was featured in USTA magazine.
